The Wolfdog without the Wolf

Size

Ideal height at the withers:
• Males: 63.5 – 73.66cm (25 – 29 inches).
• Females 61cm – 71cm (24-27.9 inches).

Tail

The tail should sit low, straight and full. It may sickle up if moving or excited. When resting, the tail should be down and straight and should go to the hock joint. The tail should be tipped in black, fully furred and not feathered.

Temperament

The Tamaskan is an intelligent, loving, active dog an outgoing disposition; they are good-natured and rarely quarrelsome. They may be reserved at an initial meeting but are easily won over. Some are independent; they do not display the possessive qualities of guard dog, and are not not aggressive towards other dogs. A sense of reserve and dignity is to be expected in a mature dog. Their intelligence and eager disposition make them an agreeable companion.

The Tamaskan Coat

Guard coat is somewhat coarse in texture, is straight, weather resistant and medium length. The undercoat differs in quantity with variations based on season and climate and is soft. Their fur is short but smooth on the head, ears, and front of forelegs and below the hocks. The coat conforms to the body without standing out or hanging.

How to Groom a Tamaskan

Outcrossing

Originally coined “the wolfdog without the wolf,” this breed has developed and evolved to occasionally include low Wolf content. While still considered a fledgling breed, the Tamaskan should never be outcrossed with Labradors or other breeds not included in the original breeds that make-up the Tamaskan. For this reason, some Tamaskan Dog Register Tamaskans are not real Tamaskans.

Why the division?

There are multiple registries for Tamaskan dogs, but some are run by self-elected groups which have named themselves the judge and jury for the breed. They believe they are the only ones aloud to decide who can claim their dog is a “real” “pure” Tamaskan. The truth is, this is a relatively new breed, and the rules will continue to change, but the general consensus for the breed should remain that the three original breeds (Alaskan Husky x Alaskan Malamute x Shepherd) combine to make up the true, original Tamaskan. If the people who made up these groups were more like Tamaskans, the world would definitely be a better place.
